I am so very grateful for my children, ages 29, 27 and 18 as they have emotionally supported me following the death of my husband, Fire Captain Ronald D. Shulga.
He developed lymphoma after he was exposed to a carcinogen while fighting a fire early in his career. Ron and I had remained good friends for 33 years before we were blessed with the opportunity to marry and share our lives together. Undoubtedly, I felt like the luckiest woman on earth being married to a man who was incredibly kind, sincere, intelligent, humble and loving. Ron never hesitated to offer his help to anyone in need.
In 2016, a couple of weeks before we were to wed, Ron was diagnosed with his fourth bout with lymphoma. His lymphoma transformed into a very aggressive type of cancer. It was such a difficult time as our happiness became intertwine with worry and uncertainty. Now more than ever, I longed to marry Ron, my best friend, and soulmate. I wanted Ron to know that I would be there for him, no matter what. I needed for him to hold on to hope and look forward to our years together.
Whenever Ron was admitted to the hospital for cancer treatment, I too was “admitted”. I spent every day and night in the hospital at Ron’s side. No matter where we were, as long as Ron was with me, I was “home”.
I couldn’t imagine my life without Ron. We held hands everywhere we went. He made me smile and laugh with such ease. He knew how to console my worries and I knew how to calm his weary mind. I needed Ron in my life simply because I loved him. I never thought I would ever have to face life without him.
On May 11, 2017, after developing pneumonia, my soulmate and best friend took his last breath. I was devastated. This reality was too much, way too much for me to face. We were only married for 8 1/2 months. How do I carry on? Where did my sweetheart and bestfriend go?
That reality of losing Ron was so incredibly painful. I do believe that he is here spiritually still loving me and helping others. It has been over two years since Ron passed away, however, I am not done grieving, not just yet.
My adult children have been a tremendous help. It’s in the little things they need which reminds me that I am still needed here on earth. I know my mission is not yet complete simply because I am still here.
I remind myself that Ron’s spirit and all that I learned from him, is part of my person. I wake up each morning knowing that my life is also a celebration of Ron’s memory and who he was.
I am so grateful that because of the love of my children, I mustered up the strength to carry on living. Also, instead of feeling cheated, I am now grateful for the time that God did give me and Ron. My life has been blessed by knowing so many good people.
I truly believe that there is nothing greater than the ability to love and to be loved. We can all give others a little love and offer hope simply by extending a smile. We never know what problems or losses other people might be facing.
Happy Thanksgiving to you.

With this year end festive season coming up & in loving memory of my dear little 4 month old boy who passed away, with whom our family haven’t the chance to celebrate his 1st birthday — I’m most thankful for having that few months of joy with him in my arms & shall cherish all the little monents he burst into cheeky gurgling laughs no amount of money can buy.
Along with the many passionate chefs/bakers in this online community, my dear little boy has driven me to be inspired to cook & bake creations dedicated to his memory to be shared with others too. I would love to extend this gratitude for the many wonderful culinary inspirations found on dedicated blogs & websites.
