A restaurant style meal is never too far from home with Harbour Trading Co. This Pan fried Spiny Lobster recipe was perfect in every way as a celebratory meal. Complete with great wine pairings and easy appetizers & desserts, for a memorable restaurant quality meal right at home!
I was thrilled to be introduced to Harbour Trading Co., because here in Missouri, fresh sea food is as elusive as… well, the sea. And that’s torture for people like Mr K and myself who were born in Sri Lanka (an island nation about a third of the size as the state we now live in), and a majority of my life was lived in New Zealand and Australia – living in the coast, literally a stone’s throw away from the ocean. And that also meant fresh sea food, from boat to table!
Harbour Trading Co. offers a great solution to memorable and special family meals, romantic date-night dinners and even gift-giving, and most importantly – the chance to enjoy some delightfully fresh organic seafood and fish. We couldn’t have been more thrilled!
And the cherry on top? We got to order ourselves a fresh, organic spiny lobster meal – just in time for Mr K’s birthday! I was really lucky, because I was able to plan a wonderful intimate party for Mr K’s birthday, and most of the work was done for me, thanks to Harbour Trading Co.!
All I needed to do was plan a wonderful party with perfect wine pairings, Appetizers and desserts to make this dinner perfect!
Ordering my meal through Harbor Trading Co.
Ordering through their website is a breeze. I simply went to the website and chose the seafood meal that I wanted (lobster), after which you can choose a meal for either 2 or 4 (family). I chose the family option. Then you can choose when you want your fresh seafood delivered right to your door. They are all easy to follow steps, and you can create an account with your name, shipping/delivery address and payment details to complete the purchase.
The other option you have is to order a meal for someone special as a gift! With the holiday season coming up, Harbour Trading Co. makes for a wonderful and thoughtful gift for a family or your favorite couple who love seafood and quality dining. The gifting option is clearly marked on the website too. You can purchase gift cards that can be redeemed on the website – so that they can choose the meal that they want!
Being able to treat ourselves to some fine dining in the comfort of our home was just what we did and the moment was made even more special because we were celebrating my husband’s birthday. I also made a delicious appetizer and dessert to complement the meal. But of course a meal this splendid wasn’t complete without wine! Harbour Trading Co. even provides you with wine pairing recommendations on their website for your meal too.
PLANNING THE PARTY
Looking for the perfect wine
That information for wine pairing came in handy when I was looking for a mid-range wine to complement our stunning Pan fried Spiny Lobster meal. Obviously, a white wine goes well with fish and seafood dishes. I knew I couldn’t go wrong with a high end Chardonnay, but let’s be honest – that’s not really a routine purchase for most of us. I wanted something that tastes amazing, but was also good value for money.
Since the lobster is cooked with butter and because of the cauliflower puree, I expected the dish to be buttery and creamy. A medium-bodied chardonnay would be perfectly complementary to this, but I also knew that a bubbly (like a good champagne) would work well too.
So I decided to look for a medium-bodied bubbly wine with some effervescence. These are NOT sparking white wines. Instead, they have a crisp, light fizz that leaves a really interesting mouthfeel. I first fell in love with these wines when I went wine-tasting once at Marlborough in New Zealand. Later I found another great effervescent wine here in Missouri called Frisk (a Riesling), which actually happens to be a wine from Australia.
So with the help of the wine section specialist at my local liquor store, I chose a lovely mid-range Chardonnay that’s typically paired with lobster due to the buttery and fruity notes in it, and also an effervescent white wine (different from the one I usually get) from Portugal that’s also quite light, crisp and fruity.
Having two types of wine is always a good thing – and to have multiple bottles depending on the company! With the way we love our wine, we probably should get 1 bottle of wine per person… 😀 Having a selection of wine offers your guest some variety too.
Waiting for our lobster… for my lobster!
Harbour Trading Co. takes a lot of care to make sure that you have the freshest and best prepared meals. The seafood, vegetables and side dishes are freshly packed and/or sealed, and they are delivered in a lovely wooden box with sufficient gel ice packs to ensure that the food remains fresh when it arrives at your doorstep overnight. They let you know when your food is shipped and sends you a tracking number too. As a food blogger, I kept seeing so may ways of re-purposing this wooden box and had a brief moment of internal debate trying to decide between using it as a safekeep box (perfect for storing trinkets) or as a food prop for photographs. Guess which side won? 🙂
Since food sustainability is a topic that’s near and dear to me, I was thrilled to know that I can actually trace my entire dish back to where it was caught and learn about the fishermen who caught the lobster through Fish Trax QR code that Harbour Trading Co., provides. How awesome is that?
The food is delivered complete with everything you’ll need – down to the salt that you will be using. The lobster is beautifully packaged in a neat burlap “sock”. This burlap sock and the glass containers that the salt comes in can be re-purposed too.
The lobster arrived in the morning on the day of Mr K’s birthday! It came with all the ingredients and instructions on how to prepare the meal. The recipe is a stunner (after all, it’s created by Harbour Trading Co.’s top chef), and it’s made even easier the recipe video on their Youtube channel, so you can visually see how to cook your meal.
I set the table for us and our guests and took inspiration from the packaging to keep it rustic and clean. I used burlap and colored napkins to set the table, and even used the burlap socks to store the cutlery and dinner napkins. 🙂
I kept the white wine out (especially the chardonnay) because you don’t want it to be completely chilled – you want it to be at a nice, cool temperature where the flavors of the chardonnay and the effervescence of the white wine are not dulled by chilling.
PARTY PAIRINGS –
Think light and fruity appetizers! Lobster is such a treat to eat, and you don’t want to have heavy and filling appetizers to ruin the main course.
If you will be entertaining friends that you know well – Casual appetizers are a great way to enjoy the company while catching up! Appetizers that they can help themselves to is a great way to go.
Appetizers – I made this delicious Mango and Goat cheese log to serve with crackers as appetizers. That fruity, creamy combination was a great lead up to pan fried spiny lobster meal! Tangy, refreshing and easy to put together and can be prepared ahead of time too. You can serve this appetizer with your favorite crackers, OR if you have time and want something a bit more fancy, you can make these Homemade Cheesy Savory Thumbprint cookies that are also quite popular on the blog!
Dessert – Again, dessert should be light too! Something refreshing and preferably can be made ahead of time to make life easier for you!
If you like something fruity and sweet this White Chocolate Coconut Hibiscus Panna Cotta with Hibiscus syrup is perfect! I made an easier version this (and I knew Mr K loves it!) and I made it ahead of time and kept it in the fridge. Light but creamy panna cotta paired with citrusy hibiscus syrup was a great way to finish my lobster’s birthday meal (I just served the syrup on the side, instead of creating syrup spheres, which made it a lot easier).
If you’re like me, then you would be craving something super citrusy! If that sounds like you, then this EASY Salted Lime Sherbet! This will be the perfect ending to a Summer dinner party too.
If you like something fairly rich, then this Coffee Flan would be the perfect dessert. It can be made ahead of time, and it a sweeter alternative to dinner. Plus your guests can have coffee and dessert in one! Another great show stopping sweet alternative is this Individual Mini Baked Alaska. Make ahead of time and torch the meringue at the table for some theatrics!
The lobster meal is easy and quick and everything comes together beautifully. There’s plenty of seasoning included in the meal too, and apart from the lobster, we did not need any seasoning for anything else, because they are all seasoned exquisitely well with an incredible amount of flavor.
Our Pan-fried Lobster with Cauliflower Puree and Shiitake Mushrooms
Mr K, who isn’t especially fond of cauliflower, couldn’t stop raving about this cauliflower puree (and has been requesting me to make it again at home ever since). The lobster was spectacular, which is no surprise considering how fresh it was. Melt-in-your-mouth soft and perfectly seasoned with that compound butter – it was delicious to say the least. We enjoyed our meal with great company, in the comfort of your own home. The only thing better than a restaurant-quality lobster meal is being in the comfort of your own home and enjoying it exactly the way you want! 🙂
I have to say that everything about this entire experience was perfect – from ordering our meal, to how it was delivered, to cooking the meal. The extra details also make it special, like being able to trace your food sources mean that they also appreciate the value of food sustainability and traceability. Plus, they have amazing customer service. They are always there to help you with questions and more information if needed. It’s those little personal touches that make it even better than a restaurant quality meal.
So thank you Harbour Trading Co. for making a special occasion even better and stress-free. We most certainly couldn’t have had a better experience at a restaurant!
