I love making cookie truffles because they are just so much fun and quintessentially Christmassy. And OREO balls are my favorite. Plus, these only take 3 ingredients, so you can whip ’em up at a moment’s notice too.
Since OREO comes in different flavors, I decided to make these OREO balls with my favorite – Mint OREO! What I loved even more about these mint OREO balls was decorating them. There’s nothing like decorating cookies and cookie truffles to bring out the spirit of the seasons, and unleash your creativity too! I’m going to share 4 of my favorite ways to decorate these Christmas OREO balls that would make these perfect for your holiday gatherings.
Shimmery Christmas Baubles OREO Cookie Balls (Christmas Ornament OREO Balls)
Hot Cocoa Mugs OREO Cookie Ball
Christmas Tree OREO Cookie Balls
and Pine Cone OREO Cookie Balls
I bought my Mint OREO from my local Walmart, and these were mixed with cream cheese and then coated with chocolate (semi-sweet or white or colored chocolate). That’s ALL you need to make regular Mint OREO balls (Mint OREO truffles). But here I’m using a few extra items to decorate them for the holiday season. I’ll list out these items below.
Shimmery Christmas baubles
Melted chocolate for decorations
Mini candies to stick on top
Luster spray OR
Luster dust in your favorite colors
Hot cocoa mugs OREO balls
Mini marshmallows (I cut the large marshmallows into small pieces)
Colored candy melts or edible pens (candy melts work better)
Pretzels for the handle on the mug
Christmas tree OREO balls
Green candy melts (to coat)
Colorful confetti
Luster dust
Confetti stars, or yellow candies, coated with gold luster dust
Pine cone OREO balls
Almond slices
Cocoa powder
Confectioner’s sugar (optional)
These Christmas OREO balls (Mint OREO truffles) are a great way to get your kids involved as they are no-bake too. They can help with making the OREO balls as well decorating them. And these cute Mint OREO truffles make excellent gifts too!
Shimmery Christmas baubles
When making these Christmas baubles, I used semi-sweet chocolate dipped OREO balls for gold luster spray (or dust). For all the other colors, I used white chocolate dipped OREO balls, as the colors stand out more.
When using luster dust, use a round paint brush so that you can “dust” the baubles with the luster dust over a larger area.
Hot cocoa mugs OREO balls
I really love how these turned out. I dipped the Mint OREO balls in white candy melts, and made sure to remove any chocolate inside the pretzel handle too.
After dipping these OREO balls, they were placed on a small layer of chocolate, so that the bottoms are coated evenly as well. This helped me get an even base by trimming the excess as well.
I added the chocolate on top for the “hot cocoa” effect, plus this way I can stick the marshmallows on top as well. I used homemade marshmallows, but you can use store-bought marshmallows that have been cut to smaller pieces.
As an added touch, I used melted chocolate to stick “candy cane” confetti on top too.
Using leftover melted candy melts, I piped mug decorations so that they looked more like mugs as well. I piped the word “love” (’cause we can always use more love in the world!), a heart, mistletoe, and a Christmas tree. Other great ideas would be smiley faces (emoji), flowers and snowflakes (I wanted to do this, but I ran out of blue candy melts, bah!). You can even dip the “mugs” in different colors too.
Christmas tree OREO balls
I wanted colorful sprinkles with some sheen. I couldn’t find this, BUT I did find colorful mini sprinkles! I mixed these with some luster dust to add some sheen to be used for the Christmas tree decorations.
I also bought some mini chocolate candies. I chose the yellow colored ones and mixed them with some gold luster dust. I used these as “stars”.
Once the Christmas tree OREO balls have been dipped in the green candy coating, I piped a swirl of the chocolate around the tree. WHILE THE SWIRL IS WET, sprinkle the luster dust confetti so that they stick to the tree. I ended up with gorgeous Christmas tree truffles with a little luster dust and colorful sprinkles!
Pine cone OREO balls
These were K’s favorite! The egg shaped OREO balls were dipped in semi-sweet chocolate, and while the chocolate coating is still wet, I added the cocoa dusted almond slices (see recipe video).
If the coating sets before you’re able to add the almond slices, don’t worry! Just dip the base of the almond slices in melted chocolate, and stick them on the Mint OREO truffle in the same pattern.
The result? A GORGEOUS truffle that looks just like a pine cone! Dust it with some confectioner’s sugar for that “snowy” look! K couldn’t believe these were actual truffles – so your guests will love these too!
These Christmas OREO balls are so delicious. The mint flavor comes through and adds a really refreshing flavor without making the OREO balls too sweet. They are so perfectly fudgy in texture too. And they look so Christmassy, you might almost not want to eat them… almost.
So go ahead and make these Christmas OREO balls (OREO truffles) happen this year! 🙂
